Sherpa Climbing School

Khumbu Region, Nepal. 1980

Gordon is proud to have participated in the first-ever climbing school for Sherpa mountaineers, held in 1980 in the Khumbu Region of Nepal.  Although it might sound like selling refrigerators to the Inuit, many participants had climbed to the tops of Mount Everest and other big mountains, but they had never been taught to rappel, use an ice axe, tie useful knots, rescue themselves from crevasses or other vital techniques to keep their clients safe. Participants included co-leaders Dr. Peter Hackett and John Fischer, local instructors Pasang Kami and Pertemba Sherpa, Jay Jensen, Lanny Johnson and others.
